Chapter Twenty-One

Eduardo took a few quick strides to fall in step behind Chanel when she walked out of Bloomingdale’s. He tipped up to her, pulled her coat tail, and said, “Guess who?”

Chanel shrieked, dropping one of her bags. Clutching several others to her chest, she turned to face her attacker. When her eyes latched onto Eduardo, her frightened look gave way to shock.

“Not happy to see me?” he asked, picking her things up.

“You know you didn’t have to do that,” she chided. The bags hanging from her wrist rustled against each other as she took the Bloomingdale’s bag from him.

“If you’d answer my calls, I wouldn’t have to stalk you.”

Chanel Bordeaux was an intelligent woman who had worked her way up the Commission’s ranks and had became a valuable asset to any organization she aligned herself with. But she also had a predictable weakness. She spent every Saturday pampering and spoiling herself on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile—with Eduardo’s money. After a massage, a facial, and a mani-pedi at Mario Tricoci’s Day Spa, she would spread his wealth at Bloomingdale’s, Gucci, Michael Kors and Kate Spade.

“I’ll call you as soon as I finish shopping,” she said, stepping around him.

He pulled her arm, snatching her out of the path of an old woman on a motorized wheelchair who seemed to be intent on mowing down half the shoppers in sight.

“I just saved your life,” he whispered to her. “The least you can do is sit a few minutes and talk to me.” He nodded toward a less populated area. When she didn’t move, he gave an exaggerated pout.

Chanel huffed loudly and led the way through the shoppers to take a seat on a bench facing the cosmetics counter.

Eduardo followed, choosing to stand instead of taking the space beside her. When he weaved his fingers through the curly hair spilling onto her shoulder, she moved her head away.

It took all of his willpower to keep from yanking her head back and wrapping his fingers around her throat. He knew she was aware that side of him existed. She’d just been smart enough to not be on the receiving end of it up until this point. But she just might, if he didn’t like the answers he got from her.

Looking down his nose at Chanel, he asked, “So why haven’t you reported back to let me know how things are going with Harper?”

She laid her bags on the space next to her, putting a little more distance between them. “Report back? You make it seem like I’m merely someone who works for you. I’m your woman—at least, that’s what I thought I was.”

“Funny, I thought the same thing. But then you started avoiding me. All my calls go to your voicemail. And to make matters worse, you don’t even give me the courtesy of returning them.”

She opened her mouth to protest, but swallowed her words when Farrell’s song “Happy” sounded off from the phone in her purse.

“Answer it,” Eduardo said.

“It can wait,” she replied, shrugging it off

“Well, it must be somebody special.
